Kawaguchi and Smirnov teamed up in spring 2006. They missed Russian Nationals and the 2007 European
Champioships after she broke her ankle in a fall in practice in December. Kawaguchi competed internationally in
singles for Japan before switching to pair skating. With former partner Alexander Markuntsov, she became the
first pair skater from Japan to medal at an ISU Championship (silver at 2001 Junior Worlds). After her partnership
with Markuntsov dissolved in 2003, she has been skating with different partners and competed with Devin Patrick
at the U.S. Championships. Kawaguchi has been living and training in Russia since 2002 and now decided to
represent Russia.
