Kawaguchi and Smirnov teamed up in spring 2006. They missed Russian Nationals and the 2007 European |
Champioships after she broke her ankle in a fall in practice in December. Kawaguchi competed internationally in |
singles for Japan before switching to pair skating. With former partner Alexander Markuntsov, she became the |
first pair skater from Japan to medal at an ISU Championship (silver at 2001 Junior Worlds). After her partnership |
with Markuntsov dissolved in 2003, she has been skating with different partners and competed with Devin Patrick |
at the U.S. Championships. Kawaguchi has been living and training in Russia since 2002 and now decided to |
represent Russia. |
